The Lord and Lady

i've been thinking about all the disney parents recently and how they aren't as fairly recognized in the movies. in thinking about this i've come to two conclusions: 1) is that almost all disney parents are either single fathers, or non existent (the main character is an orphan) and 2) that i'd like to try to draw some of them, over a period of time to respect these characters that raised the ones we all love so much.

so here is my first one: i present Lord and Lady Clayton: Tarzan's parents.

Tarzan's mother and father were sophisticatedly know as Lord John Clayton and his wife Lady Alice Clayton. They were marooned off of the west coast of Africa by mutinous crew members from the ship they were traveling on, and were forced to take shelter on the shores of an uninhabited island. while there the pregnant Lady Alice gave birth to John Clayton the third, also known as our monkey man/ hero: Tarzan. the Lord and Lady did their best to survive as long as they could, but the island was a dangerous place. Lady Alice got sick soon after her son's birth and died, and Lord John died soon after as he was killed by the Ape Kerchak, whose partner Kala then adopted the orphaned child. there wasn't much information about their lives together before this, but the Disney movie gives them a slightly different story, in which baby Tarzan is born before they arrive on the island, and both parents are killed by Sabor, the Jungle Leopard. but i loved the loving relationship they shared in their short montage of screen time. the way he looked so lovingly at her, and how they worked together in trying to start a new life in that fantastical tree house. but most of all i was always inspired by the portrait of their family, how beautifully sophisticated they looked, so serious and yet so young. and that is why i chose to draw them, one of my favorite disney couples, Lord and Lady Clayton
